Multi-Core Optical Fiber supports 118.5 Tera-bit/s *1

 Move over SWDM. Sumitomo Electric Lightwave and host of other partners has demonstrated a new multi-core multimode optical fiber with four optical paths that supports transmission capacity of 118.5 Tera-bit/s *1. The new fiber type uses conventional fiber diameter (125 microns) which allows it to be used with existing optical fiber fabrication and optical connector technologies. The new fiber is expected to be introduced in the early 2020s.
