A decade ago, America’s data centers were widely viewed as the source of a huge new environmental problem. As internet use grew by leaps and bounds, data centers were creating air pollution and greenhouse gases while guzzling electricity at a ferocious rate. But a new study from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory shows that, from the way they are cooled to how their masses of computers save power when not fully in use, data centers are becoming more energy efficient.
