Future for multimode fiber and the opportunities it presents to the data center market

Multimode Fiber is still the front runner in modern Enterprise Data Centers as it provides a low-cost way to transport high data rates over relatively shorter or smaller distances. MMF has evolved from being optimized for multi-megabit-per-second transmission using LED light sources to being optimized for supporting multi gigabit transmission using 850m VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser), which tend to be more affordable than their single mode counterparts.

The Emergence of 400G Pluggable Coherent Optics – Your Questions Answered

Pluggable coherent optics are now being developed for 400G applications with two distinct streams emerging. One is high performance CFP2 based for 1000+km reach and multi-service applications and the other is QSFP-DD ZR (and perhaps OSFP) for DCI and metro Ethernet applications. Both streams present new challenges for test and measurement, not just to meet the demanding technical specifications but also to ensure pain-free integration and deployment in an open ecosystem.

Webinar: Corning See the Light® Data Center Virtual Class Series

Join Corning for a complimentary six-part Live Webinar Series on “Staying Connected with the Data Center.” This series aims to provide quality training in the latest applications and solutions in the Data Center world, while also sharing best practices to make better informed decisions on meeting bandwidth requirements both now and in the future. Topics include scaling from 10G to 400G, the technology roadmap for optical transceivers, and what considerations data center infrastructure professionals should keep in mind to enable this evolution.

May issue of the Fiber Optic Association Newsletter Now Online

Read the next issue of the FOA’s newsletter online. While the photo above doesn’t show “social distancing”, FOA has all its certification tests available online, both for use by our schools and by our direct “Work to Cert” applicants. All tests require a proctor to oversee the applicant taking the exam. In this time of social distancing, getting a proctor can be difficult, so FOA now has procedures for online proctors and administering the exam. Contact the FOA for more information.

New Does Not Equal Clean

Fiber Optic Connectors need to be pristine when they are connected for several reasons. First, dirty or damaged connectors are the number one cause of network outages. Second, if a dirty or damaged connector is plugged into another connector, your problem just doubled. Lastly, if test equipment, like an OTDR, or a network element, such as a receiver, is damaged it can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair or replace them.

White Paper: BendBright XS Whitepaper

Bend-insensitive fibers significantly reduce #microbend and #macrobend losses across the entire wavelength spectrum used by current and future PON. There are two types of bend-insensitivity: Millimetre-range macrobend-insensitivity and Micrometre-range microbend-insensitivity. While #BendBrightXS fibres were initially developed with macrobend-insensitivity in mind, they also outperform all other existing fibre types for microbend-insensitivity. BendBrightXS fibres support the full use of transmission bands, covering the entire wavelength spectrum: from 1260 nm to 1625 nm for data transmission, and up to 1675 nm for network monitoring.

CommScope reports COVID-19 supply chain disruptions led to soft Q1

CommScope reported that its net sales in the first quarter of 2020 increased 84.9% year over year to $2.03 billion primarily due to the contribution of $1.03 billion from the company’s ARRIS acquisition. However, on a combined company basis, net sales decreased 18.0% year over year to $2.03 billion. The company estimates that first-quarter 2020 net sales were negatively impacted by approximately $70 million related to supply chain disruptions as a result of COVID-19, as well as certain other COVID-19 related disruptions.
