FRESH DATA: 30% of IoT projects Fail in the Proof-of-Concept Stage

Microsoft’s latest report, IoT Signals, surveyed over 3,000 IT professionals and executives to create a detailed analysis of the challenges and benefits of IoT adoption. Adoption is not without its challenges. The report found that 38% of respondents feel complexity and technical challenges are a deal breaker, and 47% believe there isn’t enough talent available to build or maintain an IoT deployment. 97% said they are concerned about IoT device and infrastructure security, and 43% are concerned about creating strong user authentications. And 38% are worried about maintaining their IoT devices. The report also found that 30% of IoT projects never make it out of the proof-of-concept stage.

Call for interest issued for ANSI/TIA-568.5

TIA’s TR-42.7 Engineering Committee on Telecommunications Copper Cabling Systems (568) issued a call for interest for document ANSI/TIA-568.5, titled the Single Balanced Twisted-Pair Cabling and Components Standard which will provide specifications for cables, connectors, cords, links and channels using 1-pair connectivity in non-industrial premises telecommunications networks.The standard will focus on MICE1 environments and will include cabling and component performance requirements and test procedures, reliability requirements and test procedures, as well as guidelines for adaptations to four pair cabling.

Cable Testing 101: Measuring Insertion Loss for Fiber and Copper

The amount of energy that a signal loses as it travels along a cable link used to be referred to as attenuation.The longer the cable, the greater the attenuation. For network cabling, standards now more correctly use the term “insertion loss” which refers to the loss of the signal strength at the far end of a link and includes the attenuation caused by the cable and any connection points along the way (i.e., connectors and splices), as well as any signal lost to reflections of the signal. Despite this correction in terminology, the limits, test procedures and requirements have not changed.

L-com Introduces 50/125, Multimode, OM3, OM4, OM5 Fiber Cables

L-com has added over 600 new OM3, OM4 and OM5 fiber optic cable assemblies to address high speed data center applications.
Major categories in this new release include:  MPO to MPO cable assemblies for point-to-point connectivity; MPO conversion harnesses allowing users to convert from 8 fiber to 12 or 24 fiber trunks, as well as 12 fiber to 24 fiber trunks, for use in 40G and 100G multimode deployments; and MPO fan-out cables with an MPO connector on one end of the assembly and LC, SC or ST fiber connectors on the other end.
