Good fiber-optic connections start with the ferrule

The quality of an optical connection often can be directly traced to the ferrule used in making the connector. Because the ferrule must align the optical fiber end precisely, several factors can affect the performance of an interconnection, including ferrule bore diameter mismatch, concentricity variations, non-circularity of the ferrule, lateral misalignment, end separation, and angular misalignment.
