LAN is First Line of Defense in Emergency

It may be difficult to manage the explosive growth in network systems integrated into the enterprise LAN along with the ubiquitous use of smartphones and mobile apps. But, on the plus side, the diversity of connected devices and systems gives us more tools than ever when it comes to safeguarding lives and property. In an emergency, in-building wireless enables those who are trapped or endangered to call for help; security cameras can identify and locate intruders; and environmental sensors alert building occupants at the first signs of fire.

Ethernet Alliance gears up for HSN Plugfest

The HSN Plugfest, open to Ethernet Alliance members, will be held the week of April 29, 2019, at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) in Durham, N.H. With the recent approval of IEEE 802.3bs and IEEE 802.3cd, and additional higher-speed standards in development, the pace of Ethernet’s expansion is quickly accelerating. Therefore, ensuring multivendor interoperability at ever-higher speeds is critical to building market confidence and facilitating widespread industry adoption. The Ethernet Alliance HSN Plugfest offers unparalleled opportunities for testing a diverse array of high-speed Ethernet products and solutions, including PHYs; NICs; switches, optical and copper media types, and test and debug equipment, in a secure, non-competitive environment.

CommScope FIST modular splice closure supplies fiber foundation for 5G network operators, early adopters

CommScope’s FIST Modular Splice Closure is designed to assist network operators with building a fiber foundation for future 5G networks, as its modular build allows configurations on-site, reducing the need for site inspections, decreasing rollout lead time, and enabling adaption to constantly-changing network needs. The number of 5G connections is expected to exceed one billion by 2025.

Three trends predicted for data centers in 2019

In the high-speed data center interconnect (DCI) market here are three things we predict will happen this year. 1) Data center geographic disaggregation will be come more common. 2) Data centers will transition to a 100G ecosystem and shift away from models where all the data center facilities reside in a single, large “mega data center” campus. Most CSPs have converged on distributed, regional architectures to achieve the required scale and provide cloud services with high availability. 3) The combination of silicon photonics for highly integrated optical components and high-speed silicon complementary metal-oxide semiconductors (CMOS) for signal processing will play an even larger role in the evolution toward low-cost, low-power, switch pluggable optical modules

Webinar: Creating Smart Buildings For The Future Of Work

Coupled with the rise of connected things within smart buildings, many firms have embarked on a new kind of digital transformation that relies on the promise of IoT devices and the data they generate to create a better working environment. So how do you use this data to shift the paradigm from reactive to proactive and really harness the true potential of these emerging technologies? In this webinar, you’ll learn how to get the most from your IoT investments and go beyond mere efficiency.

The era of the cloud’s total dominance is drawing to a close – Life on the edge

Better technology is one reason why computing is again becoming more distributed. Devices at the edge, from smartphones to machinery on the shop floor, are becoming more intelligent. Equipped with powerful processors, they can now tackle computing problems that a few years ago needed a fully loaded server. As for software, its increased flexibility means it can function well on the edge. Many applications are now “virtualised”, meaning they exist separately from any specific type of hardware: code can thus be packaged in digital “containers” and easily moved around within data centres—and, increasingly, closer to the edge.
