Know Your 400G Ethernet Options!

In 2017, the IEEE-SA Standards Board approved IEEE Standard 802.3bs. This resulted in the official launch of 400 Gigabit Ethernet. In theoretical terms, it is the advancement from 100G Ethernet and can operate four times faster than 100G. Not only is this, but it also offers a denser configuration and a better economy of scale. Unlike 100G transceiver modules, the 400G transceivers come with 8 channels and utilize PAM4 encoding to accomplish 50Gbps per channel.

VIAVI is introducing new solutions at ECOC including: The T-BERD/MTS 400G Network Tester, which provides rate integration spanning from 400GE down to T1/E1 in addition to fiber optic testing using OTDRs and WD  Channel Checkers along with interfaces such as QSFP-DD and SFP-DD. The MAP-300 photonic metrology and test automation platform delivers the precision required for laboratory testing, combined with configurability to meet the demands of the manufacturing process. Remote automation functionality, along with multi-user architecture, helps increase capital utilization and dramatically reduce the cost of testing.The modular OTU-8000 Optical Test Unit with a tunable DWDM OTDR and the ultra-compact OTU-5000 rack-mounted OTDR  supports rapid, automatic identification of fiber events such as bends, crushes, breaks and malicious tapping. A single optical test head can test hundreds of fiber links, and auto reports the GPS location of a fault within minutes, dramatically reducing the time and cost of construction and repair.

TIA announces new CEO David Stehlin

David Stehlin has been named the TIA’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective September 23, 2019. Stehlin brings thirty years of experience starting, leading and transforming innovative global networking and telecommunications companies through ever-changing competitive landscapes. Most recently, Stehlin served as the General Manager of Lifecycle Service Assurance at Spirent Communications (SPT.L), a global provider of testing, assurance, analytics, and security solutions where his group led the market in 5G network emulation testing. Prior to his tenure at Spirent, Stehlin served as CEO of MRV Communications, President of Overture Networks and CEO and President of Ceterus Networks. He also served as CEO of several start-up ventures, including Valo, Inc. and OnePath Networks.

Fluke Networks issues DSX CableAnalyzer adapter for ix Industrial Ethernet connector

Fluke Networks, Hirose and Harting have released an adapter supporting the ix Industrial connector for Fluke’s DSX CableAnalyzer family of network cabling certification tools. The ix Industrial is a rugged Ethernet connector for harsh environments, based on IEC 61076-3-124 standard with a 70% smaller size than the traditional 8-pin modular (“RJ-45”) connector. The new adapter allows the DSX Series to connect to cabling systems employing the ix Industrial connector for the purposes of pre-startup verification and troubleshooting.

Cabling future-ready commercial office buildings

The concept of networking in office buildings evolving from a competitive selling feature to a necessary fourth utility alongside electricity, gas, and water has developed in the last 10 years. The need to enable more instrumentation and control points inside buildings requires wired and wireless networks to connect them back to the services that orchestrate their overall operations. The more than 25 million BACnet devices — which include HVAC, lighting controls, ACS, mart meters, elevator controls, UPS and other building automation systems — are easy points of entry even for a novice hacker.

Planning for Wireless Growth in Buildings

Five years ago, digital analysts declared that the number of devices had officially surpassed the number of people in the world. And, by 2025, analysts predict there will be 6 to 10 networked devices per person. To keep up with demand, wireless access points (WAPs) can now support up to 200 client devices. This sounds like a lot, until you think about a large office building, university lecture hall, convention hotel, or airport. In facilities like these, large numbers of employees, students, and travelers are connecting multiple devices: a laptop computer, wireless phone, tablet, smart watch, handheld game console, or any number of other connected devices – potentially all at the same time! And, don’t forget building functions: many of the sensors and devices that connect and control lighting, HVAC, and security systems connect wirelessly. Suddenly, those 200 client devices are accounted for pretty quickly.
