Berk-Tek’s PowerGIG is specially designed for outdoor extended PoE and Smart City applications. When local power is available, PowerGIG-OAC can deliver PoE++ (up to 90W) and 1 Gbps to 100 meters.
High-power PoE, ratified a year ago, enables more devices, such as digital displays, laptops, televisions, wireless access points and advanced IP cameras, to be powered through the network cable versus having to connect with other cables and to an AC outlet. Think of the freedom! Think of the cost savings! So, what’s the downside?
Power over Ethernet has become the new power grid in buildings. With new standards that allow up to 99W to be delivered, PoE has grown up and is ready to power connected devices throughout the office building, school, and hospital. Panduit’s latest ebook, The Role of PoE in the Modern Connected Enterprise, explores infrastructure considerations and emerging solutions for extending the distance of PoE delivery.
Transition Networks will work with New York City’s transportation agency to connect, power and manage traffic data via its hardened TAA-compliant, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE+) switches. This application brings intelligent transportation infrastructure citywide and reinforces the relevance and timeliness of Transition Networks’ strategy of developing smart city Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.
As the industry adopts the latest generation of PoE technology for managing data and power over a single Ethernet cable, users face the challenge of making pre-standard powered devices (PDs) work alongside new IEEE 802.3bt-2018-compliant PDs in an existing Ethernet infrastructure. Microchip Technology Inc. has eased the transition with IEEE 802.3bt-2018-compliant PoE injectors and midspans for users and power sourcing equipment (PSE) chipsets for system developers that enable both pre-standard and IEEE-compliant PDs to receive up to 90W of power without changing switches or cabling.

Omnitron has launched its IEEE802.3bt OmniConverter GHPoEBT/S fiber to 60 and 90 Watts PoE Power Sourcing (PSE) Media Converters product line. Utilizing the new 802.3bt standard, Omnitron’s GHPoEBT/S fiber to PoE media converter and power injector meet network demands where fiber data reach, high PoE power, and interoperability is required and expected. The OmniConverter GHPoEBT/S is an unmanaged multi-port media-converter/injector with different fiber, and 10M/100M/1G RJ45 copper port, models available. Units are available with one or two 60 and 90 Watts power ports; models also support the 802.3af (15 Watts) and 802.3at (30 Watts) PD devices. Units with two fiber ports can be daisy chained or deployed in a redundant fiber topology for critical applications.
Berk-Tek launched two new solutions that extend the network beyond the standard 100-meter distance limitation as part of the company’s uLANTM (utility LAN) Extender Series. EXT-100 is a PoE extender system, allowing data transmission of up to 100 Mbps and PoE up to 30 Watts to be transmitted up to 1,200 feet (365 meters). PowerGIG-OAC is a fully managed hardened switch that comes pre-assembled in a NEMA 4X/IP66 enclosure.
