How fiber cleanliness is crucial to 5G connectivity

To assure reliability and performance, and avoid potential problems such as insertion loss (weakened signal), back reflection (signal is diverted back to its source), or a total system shutdown, it’s  essential that all connections are perfectly clean. This is especially important with a 5G network because every milliwatt of power is necessary for optimum connectivity and peak performance.

Fluke Networks Announces Certification Support For Anixter’s Utility Grade Infrastructure

Fluke Networks has announced testing capabilities to support Anixter’s Utility Grade (UTG) Infrastructure, a new technology platform, assurance program and design approach that redefines the infrastructure layer to support building subsystems, technologies and applications. The new test limits allow users of the DSX CableAnalyzer Series to certify the performance of installed cabling infrastructure to qualify for Anixter’s ten- and twenty-year UTG warranties.

Understanding BER Testing in Fiber Optics

Bit Error Rate (BER) is a measure of telecommunication signal integrity based on the quantity or percentage of transmitted bits that are received incorrectly. Essentially, the more incorrect bits, the greater the impact on signal quality. Bit error rate is an effective indicator of full end-to-end performance because it encompasses the receiver and transmitter as well as the media between them.

Will the Fiber Work?

For decades, fiber optics have been inspected and cleaned to ensure the proper passage of light. While fiber optics inspection and cleaning fiber connectors is not new, it is growing in importance as links with increasingly higher data rates are driving decreasingly small loss budgets. With less tolerance for overall light loss, the attenuation through adapters must be lower than ever before. This can be achieved by properly inspecting and cleaning fiber optic cables when they are installed or while making moves, or changes. During this one-hour session, Jim Davis from Fluke Network will introduce us to the basic requirements to support our applications. Participants will earn one BICSI CEC.

Bandwidth and Data Rates

The terms bandwidth and data rates are often used interchangeably, but they are in fact very different if you work in the cabling world. Your internet provider may advertise a bandwidth of 500 megabits per second (Mbps). In that case, they actually mean data rate. In the cabling world, bandwidth is a property of the cable – its ability to transmit a signal that’s intelligible at the far end. Any signal put on a copper or fiber link will degrade as it gets to the far end. This is a result of simple loss, but also more complex factors such as return loss (reflections), and in the case of copper, crosstalk. Vendors design their copper and fiber cabling to be able to deliver these raw signals (bandwidth) at higher rates.

Celebrating groundbreaking achievements with Platinum Innovators Awards

During the 2019 Cabling Innovators Awards ceremony, the final set of awards presented, the Platinums, have been judged to be superb innovations, characterized by a groundbreaking approach to meeting a need, or establishing a new level of performance, efficiency, ease-of-use, and other beneficial qualities. Here the 2019 Cabling Innovators Platinum Award honorees including: AFL, Belden, Cailabs, CommScope, Dura-Line, Cable Ferret, Fluke Networks, Panduit, and the Siemon Company.
