What do IoT, 5G and smart cities all have in common?

To make things “smart” and improve overall efficiency, we connect IoT devices through a network to the cloud (and each other). Thus, anything “smart” requires connectivity, both wired and wireless, at least in most cases. The 5G networks of the future will bring sophisticated connectivity to these edge IoT devices with higher speeds, more machine-to-machine connections and very low latencies – enabling a new generation of applications and use cases that we haven’t yet thought of.

Stewart’s shielded 2.5G RJ45 connectors support IoT, PoE applications up to 100W

Stewart Connector’s new single and multiport RJ45 connectors to support 2.5G Base-T Ethernet communications. The new 2.5G connectors deliver a high speed, small form factor and PoE capable connector for use in networking equipment, IoT devices, servers, printers, and new emerging applications. The RJ45 connectors are optimally designed to address cross-talk and return loss issues that are common in 2.5G applications.

Deerfield Beach to Become Florida’s Next Smart City

The City of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Siemens recently announced the official start of a city-wide energy efficiency project to reduce the city’s environmental footprint. Last month, the Commission of Deerfield Beach approved a 17-year contract with Siemens for energy performance services. Valued at more than $9.2 million, the infrastructure improvement project will allow the city to reduce energy consumption in more than 20 of its facilities and increase the use of alternative energy sources. Energy and operational savings are approximated to be $15 million by the end of the 17-year project.

Take CI&M’s survey tracking industry trends, challenges, expectations

Cabling Installation & Maintenance is conducting a survey of professionals across the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, gathering information from consultants, design and installation contractors, end-user organizations, and industry vendors about plans and expectations for the future, as well as the current state of their business. Topics include the trade war and tariffs, the Internet of Things, 5G, and others.

FRESH DATA: 30% of IoT projects Fail in the Proof-of-Concept Stage

Microsoft’s latest report, IoT Signals, surveyed over 3,000 IT professionals and executives to create a detailed analysis of the challenges and benefits of IoT adoption. Adoption is not without its challenges. The report found that 38% of respondents feel complexity and technical challenges are a deal breaker, and 47% believe there isn’t enough talent available to build or maintain an IoT deployment. 97% said they are concerned about IoT device and infrastructure security, and 43% are concerned about creating strong user authentications. And 38% are worried about maintaining their IoT devices. The report also found that 30% of IoT projects never make it out of the proof-of-concept stage.

Rosenberger to unveil data center, fiber-optic innovations at 2019 BICSI Fall show

At the Fall BICSI Conference, Rosenberger will introduce its Lyra Intelligent Micro Data Center platform ‘in a box’ for IoT edge and 5G MEC applications, as well as its FTH-9 Plus Wave ODF cabinet for Seismic Zone 4 “Ring of Fire”-sensitive data center installations. The LYRA IMDC provides power, cooling, UPS, cable management and cloud remote-monitoring. It can be installed in less than 3 hours with 40% space-savings versus traditional data center installations. Applications include small data centers, office areas and edge deployments.

TIA establishes Single Pair Ethernet Consortium

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) established the Single Pair Ethernet Consortium (SPEC) to accelerate the adoption of next-generation operational technology (OT) and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity. Founding members of SPEC include Belden, CommScope, Panduit and the Siemon Company. SPEC will provide vendor-neutral representation for technology leaders and users across the building automation technology ecosystem.

Prepare your organization for 100G data center Ethernet

As organizations increase the amount of data processing they do each day, some are starting to require hyperscale data centers. With the use of fiber optics and growing Ethernet standards, admins can make 100G data centers a reality. Leaf-spine topologies, Ethernet and optics research are driving the next generation of data center networking infrastructure. Stay ahead of the curve with these technologies.

The Internet of the Future – What Happens Behind the Scenes?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is at the beginning of its golden age. Forecasts note that the number of connected devices could exceed the 20-billion mark by next year and could reach 50 billion by 2022. For all this, we are basically using just one network protocol. The still-dominant IPv4 standard uses 32-bit addresses, only making around 232, or 4.3 billion different addresses possible. Luckily, a new 128-bit format has existed in principle since 1998. This IPv6 standard offers an address space of 2128, or around 340 sextillions, eliminating any concerns
