Sustainability initiatives seen driving data center physical infrastructure demand

A report from Dell’Oro Group states that data center physical infrastructure revenues are forecast to grow at an 8 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2021 to 2026, to above $31 billion and that data center sustainability has risen to the top of decision-making criteria in the industry, opening the door for significant technology transitions during this forecast period.

Carrie Goetz authors book offering guidance on data center careers

Information and communications technology (ICT) expert Carrie Goetz has authored a book with the intention of guiding professionals into careers in technology and data centers. Jumpstart Your Career in Data Centers is available for order in Kindle, paperback, and hardback versions. The book carries the tagline: Featuring Careers for Women, Trades, and Vets in Tech and Data Centers.
When announcing the book’s availability, Goetz said, “New to the industry, considering it, or want to know about the rest of it? This is for you—degree or no degree.” She added that the book is peer-reviewed and it “bridges the gap between IT and facilities. It takes a holistic approach to explaining mission-critical data centers, from site selection to the cloud and all things in between.

Managing Data Center Fiber Becoming Harder…and Easier

Managing the growing density of fibers and cables throughout data centers is becoming a full-time job. If not done well, the ramifications can be severe. Beyond the eyesore of cabling spilling into the aisle, poor fiber management can create a variety of more costly issues. Overfilling cable trays, for example, can restrict air flow between the cables, increasing thermal loading and causing the cooling system to work harder than usually needed. The inability to identify, access and manage individual fibers, compromises meantime-to-resolution, turn-up speed, moves/adds/changes and more. All of this emphasizes the need for a carefully considered cable management strategy.

In hyperscale data centers and 5G networks, current fiber counts can be as high as 6,912 and even higher-count fibers are being manufactured. As more facilities embrace fiber-rich mesh architectures, the amount of fiber is only going to increase.

Worldwide fiber-optic cable shortage looms over 5G, data center infrastructure rollouts

The fiber crunch is here, according to new research from market intelligence analyst Cru Group. A worldwide shortage of fiber-optic cable has driven up product pricing and lengthened lead times on supply, casting a shadow over ambitious industry plans for advanced telecommunications infrastructure rollouts. Governments around the world have set ambitious targets for the rollout of superfast broadband and 5G infrastructure, both of which of course require vast quantities of fiber-optic cable to be laid underground. At the same time, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Facebook owner Meta are in the process of expanding their data center footprints around the world to meet soaring demand, including globe-spanning deployments of subsea fiber-optic cabling. Prices for fiber have now reached their highest level since July 2019. North America has been less severely impacted than Europe, China and India — but that may not be for long.
