Convective Heat Transfer Analysis of a Data Center

As power densities of racks rapidly increase due to limited space, cooling efficiency is top of mind for companies in the industry. Cooling systems are very energy intensive, using as much (or more) energy as the computers they are created for, and they are expected to run continuously with the same effectiveness. Cooling strategies can be optimized by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, which enables engineers to virtually test different data center designs, gain insights into airflow patterns, and discover “hot spots.”

Company opens fiber-optics factory in Aurora

Capitalizing on growth in 5G technology and with support from state and local officials, a startup company called viaPhoton has opened a fiber-optics factory in Aurora, where it is hiring 30 people and hopes to add another 200 employees in three to five years.
CEO Baber Abbas said the company will supply data centers and mobile communications companies throughout the Midwest. Its presence here will help Illinois expand access to 5G services statewide.

Programmable Photonics

Researchers from the University of Southampton developed a method for making programmable  integrated switching units on a silicon photonics chip. By using a generic optical circuit that can be fabricated in bulk then later programmed for specific applications, the team hopes to reduce production costs.

Anritsu Launches Portable 400G Network Tester MT1040A

Anritsu has introduced its Network Master Pro MT1040A for 400G networks. The new, battery-powered tester supports 400G Ethernet and has a simultaneously installable 10M-to-100G interface for access, metro, mobile fronthaul/backhaul, and data-center transmission quality tests (BER, throughput, frame loss, and latency measurements), while the easy-to-use GUI, remote-control-over-network option, and auto-test functions add-up to a tester with unparalleled measurement efficiency.

Program provides certification to TIA’s 942 data center standard

Data center facilities that earn the TIA’s accreditation undergo an audit to ensure they comply with the association’s standards for data center infrastructure. There program includes two types of audits and certification services: Data Center Design Validation (DCDV) and Data Center Conformity Certification (DCCC). The DCDV’s objective is to ensure that the proposed design drawings for new-build or as-built drawings of existing data centers, are complete and that the design, on paper, meets the requirements of the standard. The objective of the DCCC is to verify the data center has been implemented in conformity to the validated designs in the DCDV phase and the requirements specified in the ANSI/TIA-942. 

Kyoto Semiconductor develops high-speed photodiode with 400Gbps transmission speed

Kyoto Semiconductor has developed a high-speed photodiode KP-H KPDEH12L-CC1C to support 400Gbps transmission systems that use PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4) inside and between data centers. With the introduction of this InGaAs photodiode, the company is continually supporting the increasing speeds and capacity requirements for transmission systems in 5G networks and beyond. Mass production will start in November, 2020.
