Single & Multimode Silica Optical Fibers Drawn from 3D Printed Preforms

In the recently published, ‘Silica optical fiber drawn from 3D printed preforms,’ the authors created single and multimode fibers that can be used to create designs and parts for a range of networks, likely related to telecommunications and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Researchers investigated created a silica preform through both 3D printing and thermal processing—no small feat, considering it requires temperatures over T = 1900 ℃. To avoid this issue, the researchers tried using a lower melting polymer—a hybrid polymer-glass mix—via DLP printing.

Rosenberger OSI’s Identification Patch Cord (IDP) has been recognized as one of the best in the industry at the Cabling Installation & Maintenance Innovators Awards 2019. The IDP simplifies the manual patching of patch cords in distributors while preventing the wrong patch cord from being pulled. Thanks to an external light source, which is simply plugged onto the connector at one end of a patch cable to be patched, its other end can be unmistakably and reliably identified.

Deerfield Beach to Become Florida’s Next Smart City

The City of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Siemens recently announced the official start of a city-wide energy efficiency project to reduce the city’s environmental footprint. Last month, the Commission of Deerfield Beach approved a 17-year contract with Siemens for energy performance services. Valued at more than $9.2 million, the infrastructure improvement project will allow the city to reduce energy consumption in more than 20 of its facilities and increase the use of alternative energy sources. Energy and operational savings are approximated to be $15 million by the end of the 17-year project.

Traditionally, single-mode has been limited to applications such as long haul, service provider networks, metropolitan area networks, and backbone distribution for large campuses. However, single-mode is now finding its way into shorter reach applications.In early 2018, Leviton surveyed network professionals about the type of fiber they would install today to plan for future growth, and found a significant jump in OS2 compared to surveys from previous years. This paper will address some prevailing preconceived notions about single-mode fiber — whether true or false — and provide guidance for single-mode testing, cleaning, and inspecting.

Using fiber optics is not the silver bullet, but it is the best option many have to keep their systems operating during natural disasters. Fiber networks—especially the ones built underground—are more durable than copper infrastructure, satellite and wireless. Fiber cables typically stand up very well to a weather event compared to a copper cable. Copper cables do not perform well when they are damaged and get wet. After Hurricane Sandy, Verizon started replacing the old, copper cables with fiber because of its operational robustness.

But there’s also a national push to protect citizen privacy, potentially restricting data usage. Cities are now beginning to question how much citizen data, if any, they can use to track government operations.
