The Importance of Testing Fiber Optics in Submarine Networks

Subsea or submarine cables are fiber optic cables that connect countries across the world via cables laid on the ocean floor. These cables – often thousands of miles in length – are able to transmit huge amounts of data rapidly from one point to another. According to a 2019 report by StableSeas, commercial undersea cables transmit 97% of this internet and telecommunications data. With such heavy reliance on the technology, there’s no denying that submarine cabling is supporting the global economy, and an outage could have catastrophic consequences, which makes proper testing of submarine networks critical.

Sumitomo Electric secures submarine cable contract in Alaska

Sumitomo has been awarded a contract for the Stikine Crossing Submarine Cable Replacement Project from Southeast Alaska Power Agency (SEAPA). The project involves replacing a 138kV OF (Oil Filled) submarine power cable with an environmentally friendly 69kV XLPE (Cross-linked polyethylene) submarine cable with ancillary equipment for a fully functional system in the Stikine crossing (approx. 16,700 feet) between Vank and Woronkofski Islands, near Wrangell, Alaska, USA.

HVDC test on the COBRAcable submarine power cable link between The Netherlands and Denmark successfully completed

Prysmian has successfully completed the HVDC test on the submarine interconnector COBRAcable that links The Netherlands and Denmark. The COBRAcable interconnector produces benefits for both Denmark and The Netherlands, ensuring a reliable energy supply in the two countries. It also contributes to the development of a sustainable international energy landscape, a key priority for the European Union, which is supporting the project through the EEPR (European Energy Programme for Recovery).
