The Competition Surrounding 800 Gigabit Ethernet

The high demand for technologies for faster FO data transmission in hyperscale data centers has triggered a whole range of developments. The manufacturer consortia – called MSAs (Multi-Source Agreements) – are working at high pressure on new specifications, which focus on the roadmap from 400 to 800 Gigabit Ethernet (800G). The cloud industry is waiting for new, faster optical connectivity. It is expected that cloud companies will need usable 800G modules by 2023-2024 to be able to increase the transmission performance in their data centers.

Ethernet consortium announces completion of 800GbE spec

The Ethernet Technology Consortium has announced the completion of a specification for 800 Gigabit Ethernet technology. Based on many of the technologies used in the current top-end 400 Gigabit Ethernet protocol, the new spec is formally known as 800GBASE-R.The 800GbE spec adds new media access control (MAC) and physical coding sublayer (PCS) methods, which tweaks these functions to distribute data across eight physical lanes running at a native 106.25Gbps. The 800GBASE-R specification is built on two 400 GbE 2xClause PCSs to create a single MAC which operates at a combined 800Gbps.

Infinera and Corning Achieve 800G Across 800 Kilometers with ICE6

Infinera and Corning demonstrated 800G single wavelength transmission with Infinera’s sixth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE6) technology across 800 km on Corning’s TXF® optical fiber. This record-breaking achievement was accomplished using Corning’s state-of-the-art TXF fiber, an ITU-T G.654.E compliant, ultra-low-loss, silica-core fiber with large effective area and the advanced features of Infinera’s vertically integrated ICE6 technology.

Verizon runs 800 Gbps of data across single wavelength of live fiber

Verizon, in conjunction with Ciena and Juniper Networks, have demonstrated the ability to move 800 Gbps of data on a single wavelength. The successful trial on Verizon’s live fiber network showed equipment interoperability from two different suppliers and the capability to quadruple the typical capacity carried on a wavelength. The test traffic was transmitted between two Juniper Networks QFX 5220 packet platforms across two Ciena 6500 platforms powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent optics.

QSFP-DD800 MSA Group eyes 800-Gbps pluggable transceivers

Several industry leaders, including Broadcom, Cisco, Finisar, Intel, Juniper Networks, Marvell, Molex and Samtec, have announced a new QSFP-DD800 MSA Group to advance the development of high-speed, double-density quad small form factor pluggable (QSFP-DD800) modules to support 800 Gbps connectivity. This MSA will enable QSFP-DD800’s eight electrical lanes to operate at 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps) each, by providing technical solutions for 800 Gbps module and connector systems. It will also define a module, connector, stacked connector and a hybrid connector that is a BiPass/Flyover variant which can eliminate the signal losses on a traditional PCB.
