IO-Link and Single Pair Ethernet, two recent networking protocols for improved industrial connectivity

single-pair Ethernet takes the enterprise-class networking protocol and implements robust and reliable device communication over a single twisted pair. Reducing the number of pairs by a quarter reduces cable weight, reduces cable cost, and uses robust industrial-grade widely available connectors. Unlike the serial-based IO-Link, SPE functions as a standard networking protocol and can operate over distances of up to 15 metres using unshielded cables and 40 metres using shielded cables.

White Paper: Smart Building Connectivity

This white paper from CommScope covers how to create an integrated suite of connectivity solutions; without adding layers of complexity; understand where and how key technologies such as PoE, IoT, Wireless, etc. fit.; how to flatten complexity with shared infrastructure; how to wire for the future, not just the present; the ins and outs of adding wireless connectivity.

New ways to install fiber in old buildings and homes

As fiber to the home (FTTH) builds accelerate globally to meet growing bandwidth needs, service providers are looking to install optical fiber not just to, but also into the home for residential subscribers. For residents and businesses in buildings, optical fiber also will be installed throughout the building to reach each subscriber’s unit. Placing fiber deep inside the living unit connected to an indoor optical network terminal (ONT) for each subscriber facilitates access to power outlets, and Wi-Fi coverage, so that subscribers can enjoy gigabit speeds and beyond

SMART BUILDINGS TECHNOLOGY PREMIERES NEW WEBSITE

Endeavor Business Media introduced a “preview” launch of Smart Buildings Technology, a new brand created to serve the ecosystem that brings integrated intelligence to new construction and existing buildings. Comprised of a digital magazine, website, and newsletters, Smart Buildings Technology’s focus is on making disparate systems work together effectively across technologies, building systems, internal organizations, and professional trades serving smart buildings.

Structured cabling solutions are key to addressing increasing demands on data centers

As the transition to a digital world continues, the pressure is on for data centers to meet the increased connectivity challenges this transition brings. Data centers must be scalable, faster and more efficient, which is driving the development of fiber-optic cable management systems. The Internet of Things is creating unprecedented demand on fixed networks, while the rise in cloud computing traffic, content delivery networks and edge computing are also having a significant impact.

Leveraging Single Pair Ethernet In Building Automation

There are numerous efforts to take Ethernet to the edge devices but network fragmentation has resulted in multiple communication networks coexisting in building automation – heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) applications use Modbus, access control uses BACnet, lighting uses LonWorks and fire safety uses Ethernet. Single Pair Ethernet offers a simplified solution that could support all these devices and offer direct accessibility for the control system, status updates, predictive maintenance, standardized hardware and interoperability across various systems.
