Single Pair Ethernet Now Ready to Use

The revolutionary transmission technology Single Pair Ethernet is crossing the threshold from idea to market maturity. SPE could well replace traditional field bus technology in many areas. It is coming at just the right time to accelerate the digitalization of building automation and the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT).

IO-Link and Single Pair Ethernet, two recent networking protocols for improved industrial connectivity

single-pair Ethernet takes the enterprise-class networking protocol and implements robust and reliable device communication over a single twisted pair. Reducing the number of pairs by a quarter reduces cable weight, reduces cable cost, and uses robust industrial-grade widely available connectors. Unlike the serial-based IO-Link, SPE functions as a standard networking protocol and can operate over distances of up to 15 metres using unshielded cables and 40 metres using shielded cables.

Leveraging Single Pair Ethernet In Building Automation

There are numerous efforts to take Ethernet to the edge devices but network fragmentation has resulted in multiple communication networks coexisting in building automation – heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) applications use Modbus, access control uses BACnet, lighting uses LonWorks and fire safety uses Ethernet. Single Pair Ethernet offers a simplified solution that could support all these devices and offer direct accessibility for the control system, status updates, predictive maintenance, standardized hardware and interoperability across various systems.

Is IO-Link with Single Pair Ethernet the Future?

20 meters. That is the maximum distance between an IO-Link master port and an IO-Link device using a standard prox cable. By using SPE, we gain the Ethernet cable length advantage. So, instead of being limited to 20 meters, your IO-Link cabling could stretch to 100 meters! Imagine the opportunities that opens in industrial applications. It is possible that even longer runs will be achievable.

Single Pair Ethernet in Automation | Ethernet Alliance

With the advent of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), systems that formerly used RS-485 serial communications can be upgraded with little change to the media and brought into the broader Ethernet network. In addition, Single Pair Ethernet brings the added benefit of remote powering of devices using SPoE (Single Pair Power over Ethernet), a standard like the familiar PoE (Power over Ethernet).

New Single-Pair Ethernet for Condition-Monitoring Applications

New single-pair Ethernet (SPE) physical-layer standards developed by the IEEE are offering new connectivity solutions for communicating asset health insights for condition-monitoring applications. 10BASE-T1L is a new Ethernet physical-layer standard (IEEE 802.3cg-2019) that was approved by the IEEE on November 7, 2019. It will dramatically change the automation industry by significantly improving operational efficiency through seamless Ethernet connectivity to field-level assets.
