In February, Nokia Bell Labs successfully completed multiple submarine field trials over Facebook’s 5,500km submarine cable between New York and Ireland, which has yet to come online. The result was impressive: Using Bell Labs’ new probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) technology, the trials improved the optical transmission capacity of the cable by nearly 2.5 times.
